Federation Stations required a form of defense against hostiles and meteors. To meet this requirement, missile defense turrets were installed on all large Federal space stations. Lunar Base used its turrets in a secondary role of protecting Earth from all hostile threats.

When a Meteor was fired at Earth the United Citizen Federation was not prepared and did not destroy it before impact. After this attack however Luna Base's missile turrets were on alert and fired on at least one meteor destroying it.
