The Ambush at Whiskey Outpost refers to a battle between the Roughnecks and Arachnids at Whiskey Outpost.

History[]

After a successful battle against the Arachnids on Tango Urilla, Fleet Command received a distress call from General Owen at his command post on Planet P. The Mobile Infantry responded by sending their best unit, Rasczak's Roughnecks, to investigate. Being a scouting mission, the Roughnecks deployed only a single platoon to the planet, with Lieutenant Rasczak personally acting as the mission commander. The Roughnecks were deployed a distance away from the outpost, travelling through a canyon in mountainous terrain, causing radio interference. Before reaching the outpost, it was clear to the Roughnecks that there was an Arachnid presence on Planet P when their radio operator, Gillespie, was impaled and carried away by a Hopper Bug. Rasczak used a sniper-type Morita Assault Rifle to shoot Gillespie in a mercy killing, and emphasized his expectation that if he were to suffer the same fate, he required his squad to similarly euthanise him.

Upon arrival to the outpost, the personnel were discovered to have been massacred by Arachnids, which had tunneled in through the mess hall. The only survivor was General Owen, who became a post-traumatic wreck. While inspecting the base, they discovered that the Arachnids had sucked out the brain of the outpost garrison's radio operator Lieutenant Farley, and presumably it was he who had sent out the distress signal. The Lieutenant briefly considered killing the General, who had been uncontrollably ranting in a panic, but Corporal Rico dissuaded him from doing so.

Only moments later thousands of Arachnid Warrior Bugs supported by several Tanker and Hopper Bugs rushed the outpost. General Owen was killed by a Hopper that had been shot down by Corporal Rico. Johnny supervised Dizzy Flores, who was the relief radio operator, and demanded that Fleet send down a landing craft to evacuate the team. Despite the best efforts of the Roughnecks, the Arachnid forces were able to penetrate the base just as a Fleet Landing Boat, piloted by Rodger Young (176) pilots Carmen Ibanez and Zander Barcalow, arrived to pull the troopers out. Lieutenant Rasczak was dragged into the soil under the outpost floor when a tanker bug breached the surface. Rasczak was yanked free but his legs had been chewed off, presumably by the tanker. With his last ounce of life, he ordered Johnny to shoot him, sparing him from becoming crippled for life. As the platoon retreated to the boat, Dizzy Flores, having valiantly killed the tanker with a grenade, was killed by a warrior bug. Just as the remainder of the team boarded the boat, a tanker burst through the wall of the outpost, laying down a napalm blast that incinerated the two troopers who'd been laying heavy fire with the tower cannons.

The Roughnecks took heavy casualties, with 16 of the initial 27 troopers surviving the battle. Following the deaths of Lieutenant Rasczak and Sergeant Gillespie, Johnny assumed command. He first ordered the pilots of the Landing Boat to relay his request for the Fleet to commence an immediate orbital strike on the planet but was denied. Complaining that the Mobile Infantry was considered expendable, he stalked back to the cargo bay to attend to Dizzy in her last moments. It would be later revealed that the Sky Marshal had other plans for the planet, alluding to the future mission launched hours later to mount a full invasion to capture the planet's suspected Brain Bug.
